Visit the York Paediatric Therapy Services Clinic

Every parent wants to see their child happy, content and full of confidence to meet any challenge. We invite you to contact us and see how together we can make a life-long contribution in the progression, development and functioning of your child.

Our therapies are detailed below.

Occupational Therapy

The term “occupation” is normally associated with paid work, but an occupational therapist offers something much broader than this, supporting all abilities and skills necessary for engaging in everyday activities.

To determine if your child could benefit from occupational therapy, please first take a look at some of the common behaviours exhibited, and if you’ve identified three or more statements that apply to your child, we recommend that you contact us for a screening. This process typically occurs over the phone and can be completed in as little as 10-15 minutes.

After evaluation, our occupational therapist may recommend a variety of services, including direct therapy, consultative services, school-based occupational therapy and/or referrals to other professionals. How long therapy continues will depend on the unique needs of your child.

We also work with children who have attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy uses scientific principles to prevent, identify, assess, correct and/or alleviate various movement dysfunctions, including:

  • Gross motor functioning
  • Body coordination
  • Mobility in the home and community
  • Adaptive equipment needs
  • Adolescent sports injuries
  • Paediatric orthotics

Speech Therapy

Imagine that in a recent parent-teacher conference, the teacher expressed concern that your child may have a problem with certain speech or language skills. Or perhaps while talking to your child, you noticed an occasional stutter. Could your child have a problem? And if so, what should you do?

It's wise to intervene quickly. An evaluation by one of our speech-language pathologists can help determine if your child is having difficulties. Give your child the opportunity to grow in his or her speaking confidence! Speech therapy evaluates and provides intervention in such areas as:

  • Speech/articulation skills
  • Language skills
  • Oral-motor skills
  • Cognitive or thinking skills

Speech therapy services are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Contact us to schedule sessions.

MEDEK® Therapy

Created by Ramon Cuevas, a clinical kinesiologist/physical therapist, MEDEK (Cuevas Medek Exercises or CME®) comes from Dynamic Method of Kinetic Stimulation. It is used to promote automatic motor responses in children ages 3 and older with abnormal or delayed motor development. Learn more about how CME® is used.

Sensory Integration

For most children, sensory integration skills—understanding what they see, hear, smell, feel and taste—develop naturally and without effort. But for others, sensory integration does not occur smoothly, and children with SI dysfunction find sensory information both confusing and distressing. This can cause them to have incorrect or inappropriate reactions to sensory information. The therapists at York Paediatric Therapy, however, can help children better understand the world around them through sensory integration therapy.

Learn more about the sensory diet, a key way you as a parent can become involved in your child’s sensory integration.

Neurodevelopmental Therapy

We offer neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), a therapy that uses guided movements to help children who have difficulty controlling their movements because of neurological challenges. This therapy can help these children develop the functional movements necessary to perform many daily tasks.

Feeding Disorder Therapy

Is your child a picky eater? Feeding disorders are often associated with medical, developmental, emotional and/or sensory conditions. To get a sense of what you’ll discuss with one of our therapists during your first appointment, view our feeding intake form. To learn more about feeding disorders and how occupational therapy can help, read Occupational therapy for the seriously picky eater, a Star article featuring our therapist/owner, Rhona Feldt-Stein.

Therapeutic Listening

In therapeutic listening, we combine sound training with sensory integration techniques using electronically altered music to improve speech, attention, coordination, sensory skills, body organization and self-regulated behaviours. Learn more about how therapeutic listening works and who can benefit from it.

Yoga for the Special Child®

York Paediatric Therapy Services is pleased to provide Yoga for the Special Child®, which is a comprehensive program of yoga techniques designed to enhance the natural development of babies and children with special needs ranging from Down syndrome to cerebral palsy to disorders like ADHD.

We are also providing 'Mindful Yoga for Kids' in schools and at our clinic. Please contact us to discuss how 'mindfulness' can make a difference in your child's concentration, calmness and productivity.

Post-Concussive Program

With the increased awareness of head injuries resulting from recreational sports, it is imperative that your child begin their rehab as soon as possible to ensure a complete recovery. The program includes:

  • Comprehensive assessments
  • Individualized treatment program
  • Gross motor assessment and treatment
  • Visual perceptual assessment and treatment
  • Cognitive remediation and compensation strategies
  • Fatigue management
  • Behavioural management
  • Return to school and return to sport programs

We are pleased to provide your child's school, parent body and coaches with educational forums on post-concussive syndrome and how to ensure a smooth transition back to school/sports.
